Extracting a Useful Color Palette from an Image

A palette extractor summarizes sampled pixels; it does not know which object in the photograph is semantically important. Good results come from choosing an appropriate color count, sampling precision, and contrast reference, then treating the generated palette and gradient as design starting points rather than absolute truth.

More colors are not always more useful

Four to six colors often produce a clearer UI palette, while larger counts preserve more accents from complex photographs. If neighboring swatches look nearly identical, reduce the color count or increase sampling precision instead of keeping redundant tones.

Sampling changes speed and detail

Denser sampling can capture small accents but requires more browser work. Faster sampling is appropriate for large images or quick exploration. Re-run at a finer setting when a small but important color is missing.

Contrast must be checked in context

A color that looks clear on one background may fail accessibility contrast on another. Use the contrast reference as a guide, then verify text and UI combinations with the actual foreground size, weight, and background used in the final design.
